Sophora japonica is a big tree with 5-6m height. each leaf has from 7 to 17 leaflets.
What is the common name for Sophora japonica?
Japanese pagoda tree, Sophora japonica, commonly called Japanese pagoda tree or Chinese scholar tree, is native to Vietnam, China and Korea, but not Japan. It is a medium to large deciduous tree that typically matures to 50-75′ (less frequently to 100′) tall with a broad rounded crown.
Flowers grow in flowers, yellow and white;The roots and flowers also are used to treat intestinal hemorrhages, likely due to their high-flavonoid contents.

Sophora japonica flowers contain beneficial phytochemicals including rutin, quercetin, fatty acids, and polysaccharides and often appear in TCM formulas to regulate blood flow, tone the liver and kidney, and clear heat.

Distributing, collecting and processing

Cây hòe Sophora japonica grows wild and is grown everywhere in our country. In the past, people drank water mixed with this flower to be “cool” and used it to have yellow dye. Every year, it is possible that we can buy a lot and use it domestically. But recently, the export demand is large, so we are developing planting. (1) Planting from seeds or cuttings. After 3-4 years, it can be harvested. The tree lives for a long time, and the longer the time, the higher the yield. Flowers must be picked when the buds are still fresh, containing many active ingredients, then being posed under sunlight or dried

Chemical composition

In sophora japonica flower, there are from 6-30% rutin (rutosite). Rutin is a glucoside, when being hydrolysed will give quexitin or quexetola, glucose and ramnoza. The fruit also contains rutin. Rutin is a small yellow or white-yellow brooch-shaped crystal, soluble in 10,000 parts of water, 650 parts of alcohol, sparingly soluble in methyl alcohol and lye. (2)
